What’s the difference between a Pergola and a Veranda ?A pergola is a garden room with a flat 'cubic' style roof that can be attached to the house or freestanding. It has either a bio climatic roof with louvred blades that rotate to the angle of the sun or structural waterproof canopy that retracts to leave an open roof allowing the sun to shine in. A Veranda is typically attached to the house with sloping fixed glass roof or retractable canopy roof. Both systems can have glass sides and shutters, either sliding or fixed and/or roller blinds that are automatically operated to create room that is comfortable and protected in all seasons.

Does a Veranda or Pergola require foundationsThe straight forward answer is yes. A quality Pergola or Veranda is quite a heavy structure and needs proper support under the posts to bear it's weight and other factors such as snow loadings. This support is normally provided with a concrete pad, though there are ways to fix to existing patio slabs and decking using specialist fixtures. If not supported properly any Veranda or Pergola is likely to fail and it could be expensive to put right, better to do it properly in the first instance. We are able to advise you on the necessary foundation type during our site visit.
